|||Mpumalanga authorities warned speeding drivers on Friday that they risked arrest and losing their licences.
“We will not hesitate to arrest drivers who want to endanger the lives of other road users,” Mpumalanga community safety, security and liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe said in a statement.
“Speeding is one of the causes that has led to people losing their lives in road accidents, therefore drivers are warned.”
Apart from freeways, police were watching townships, where speeding was a threat to pedestrians.
The statement followed the arrest of three motorists driving between 161km/h and 177km/h on the N3 between Villiers and Heidelberg on Thursday. Four motorists were arrested over the Christmas weekend for driving between 170km/h and 177km/h on the same road.
All seven were charged and released on bail of between R1000 and R1500 and expected to appear in court early next year. – Sapa
