The minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, has denied using the k-word on an SAA flight.

Department spokesman Cornelius Monama said a report published on the alleged incident in a Sunday newspaper was “sensational hot air”. On Sunday, it was reported that a businessman said he had seen Xingwana getting into the plane shouting: “Shut up, shut up, is it because I am a k*****?” to a (white) air hostess. Xingwana had asked to be seated in business class but had an economy class ticket for the flight between Accra and Joburg.

It was reported that, as the air hostess tried to reason with her, Xingwana could be overheard saying: “But I am a shareholder of this company.”

But Monama said Sunday’s report had been one-sided.

The minister denied using the k-word or saying anything relating to SAA shareholding, he said.

“As a Platinum Card holder, the minister was asking politely if she could be upgraded to business class and was shocked by the rude and disrespectful attitude she received from the SAA official.

One of her own colleagues even took over and assisted the minister.” - Cape Argus
