|||South Africa's tsunami warning has been lifted, Cape Town's disaster risk management centre said on Wednesday.
“Residents of Cape Town are advised to disregard the rumours of a tsunami and that the probability risk is low for the coastal areas of Cape Town,” spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.
“This tsunami and earthquake alert does not warrant the authorities in South Africa to take any action.”
According to the Council for Geoscience earlier on Wednesday, South Africa was under tsunami watch but there was no need to panic, the SA Weather Service said.
A tsunami watch meant that the country was aware of the warning but that no immediate action was required, SA Weather Service official Hannelee Doubell said.
According to reports on Wednesday, an 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, putting a number of Indian Ocean countries on tsunami watch.
The tsunami watch was in effect for Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Maldives and other Indian Ocean islands, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore. - Sapa
