|||A student of the University of Pretoria was accidentally shot and wounded near the student centre at the Hatfield campus on Wednesday evening, a spokesman for the university said.
Sanku Tsunke said the gun, which was in the woman's possession, accidentally discharged, wounding her in the stomach.
“It was accidental, it was not the result of crime-related activity.”
The matter was being investigated by Brooklyn police.
Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said the woman, in her mid 20s, was seriously injured. She was stabilised at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.
TUKS FM, the university's radio station, posted on Twitter that the accident happened during a graduation ceremony. People on the scene saw the woman sit down and cover herself with her graduation gown before the gunshot was heard.
It reported that campus security director Colin Fouche said the shooting appeared to be accidental. - Sapa
