Nomvula Mokonyane ordered to pay up for East Rand hospital negligence.
|||Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has been ordered to pay an East Rand mother R12 million for several acts of negligence at a state-owned hospital that caused her daughter to become brain-damaged and paralysed during birth.
Prudence Khumbula’s lawsuit on behalf of her daughter, Tanya, who is now five, was heard in the Johannesburg High Court last month where Justice Kathy Satchwell ordered Mokonyane to pay Khumbula, in her capacity as mother and natural guardian of her child, R12m minus the interim payment of R1.1m “such amount to be inclusive of the costs of the trustee, ruling that payment must be made within the next 60 days”, according to Joseph’s Incorporated, which is representing mother and daughter.
Last year, the court ruled that Edenvale hospital was negligent in its treatment of her as its staff had failed to perform an immediate caesarean. -Saturday Star
