|||Durban - A 35-year-old man was arrested for stealing cheques worth almost R4 million from the Ulundi District Municipality, police said on Monday.
Lt-Col Vincent Mdunge said the man would appear soon in the Empangeni Magistrate's Court.
He registered a company with a name similar to that of an authentic service provider contracted to the municipality, stole cheques to the value of R3.198 million and banked them in his own account.
Mdunge said that earlier this year police arrested a woman who worked for Absa Bank and facilitated the cashing of a stolen cheques for R690 000.
A total of six cheques were stolen from the municipality in January.
The man posed as a representative of the authentic company and collected the cheques.
“The suspect reportedly spent the fraud proceeds buying expensive furniture, clothing and spent time with different women in numerous luxury hotel accommodations in the country.”
Mdunge said an order had been obtained to freeze an estimated R1million that was still in the man’s bank account. - Sapa
