The Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) expressed concern on Tuesday about domestic violence, after one of its employees was shot dead by her boyfriend.
The man, a 25-year-old police constable, shot dead Tsholanang Kgaladi at the Moot police station in Pretoria on Monday. He then killed himself.
“We are shocked by this horrific incident which places the spotlight again on domestic violence, with horrific consequences, as in Tsholanang's case,” HPCSA acting CEO Dr Kgosi Letlape said.
“She went to the police station for assistance and protection only to be shot and killed.”
He said thousands of women were subjected to some form of abuse every day, and the perpetrators were not stopped.
Tsholanang had worked as a call centre agent at the HPCSA for the past year.
The HPCSA said it had guidelines for emergency care practitioners to detect early signs of domestic violence and to give appropriate referral for help before it was too late.
“With these guidelines, emergency care practitioners have a renewed responsibility to ensure that all victims of abuse receive appropriate medical attention and that their right to confidentiality and security is protected,” Letlape said. - Sapa
