A man has been arrested for possession of heroin with an estimated street value of R2 million in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old man was arrested on Monday by police acting on a tip-off about drugs at a house in Umbilo, said Colonel Jay Naicker.

“We observed the residence and waited for the man to leave the house. When he came out he was carrying a plastic packet with heroin powder.”

Naicker said the man had paid R500 000 for the drugs, but would have made an estimated R2 million in street sales.

He said this was the work of a syndicate which consisted of foreigners and South Africans, and was linked to the arrest of a 30-year-old man in Mayville, Durban, on Wednesday.

Police arrested him after watching him for a month. He had in his possession heroin with an estimated street value of R130 000.

“We are hoping to bust the syndicate as there are ongoing investigations. There is a possibility of more (arrests) being made,” Naicker said.

The 35-year-old man was expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. – Sapa
