“It is very disturbing to learn that more of our police are dying every day in their line of duty,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I would like to send my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased policeman.”
He wished a second officer, who was injured in the shoot-out, a speedy recovery.
Two police constables patrolling the area on Sunday spotted a man who was wanted in an assault case.
“As they stopped their vehicle, the suspect opened fire on them, hitting the first policeman in his abdomen and the second in the right arm,” police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said at the time.
The policeman who was wounded in the arm fired back and struck the gunman in the neck.
All three were taken to the Church of Scotland Hospital, where the gunman and the officer with the abdominal wound died. - Sapa
