|||The search for four awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from police custody continued on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.
All Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal police stations had been warned to be on the alert, spokesman Captain Ernest Sigobe said.
Ntlantla Mvoko, 23, Sonwabile Makhongo, 25, Menzi Zekane, 19, and Zwelithini Gibeni, 24, were being taken from Ngquana police station to Mthatha when they overpowered their police escort in Butterworth on Wednesday morning.
A woman passer-by was shot and killed during their escape. They fled with three police guns.
The four were awaiting trial for armed robbery and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. They stole the police vehicle transporting them and abandoned it in the Tanga area. They then hijacked a passing car. It was recovered on Wednesday near the Mbashe River, close to Mthatha.
A task team had been formed to catch them. The public was warned not to try and apprehend them as they were armed and dangerous. – Sapa
