|||A 28-year-old man was gunned down, allegedly in a gang killing in Clarke Estate in Elsies River on Monday.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said Elsies River police had been called to the murder scene on an open field opposite Kloof Court in Clarke Estate.
The victim is Alrich Cupido.
Filander said he had been shot in the face. Three men fled on foot.
“We opened a murder docket and will investigate if this incident could be gang-related. No arrests as yet.”
Witnesses said the gunman had told the victim’s friends that he would “come back for them”.
Cupido’s mother, Gail Hans, told the Cape Argus she had heard from neighbours that her son had been killed.
“I heard from people that he was shot… I don’t know how and when. There were people who saw what happened, but they are afraid to come forward,” she said.
Hans added that her son had been sitting with friends at his eldest son’s mother’s house when he was shot.
She said her son had four children – two girls and two boys.
“He did not work at all after he had an accident a few years ago; he had problems with his leg,” she said.
In another attack on Friday, a 46-year-old shop owner was held up while serving customers in Harare in Khayelitsha.
Filander said the assailants had been arrested after a shoot-out in Mitchells Plain. One had been killed.
He said the suspects had entered the shop and one had taken out a firearm and demanded cash and the owner’s firearm.
The suspects had fled the shop with the cash and firearm and jumped into a gold Toyota Avanza.
The incident and a detailed description of the Avanza had been broadcast to police on patrol, said Filander .
Police had spotted the vehicle on Baden Powell Drive going towards Mitchells Plain.
Filander said that when the suspects saw them, they had fired several shots at the police, who returned fire. The suspects had stopped the vehicle near Swartklip in Mitchells Plain and run into the bushes, still firing at police, Filander said.
During the shoot-out, 25-year-old Mxolisi Mabhija had been killed. Police had recovered a 7.62 pistol.
“They also managed to arrest four other suspects, aged between 20 and 28, and recovered one toy gun and an undisclosed amount of cash.”
He said no police officers had been injured during the shoot-out.
The men will appear in court soon for attempted murder and armed robbery.
