Four Western Cape ANC Youth League members, who pleaded guilty to misconduct for disrupting a lecture by President Jacob Zuma in February, have received suspended sentences.

“The suspended sentences are an opportunity for them to be rehabilitated,” African National Congress Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile said on Thursday.

Zuma was delivering a memorial lecture at the Good Hope Centre when a violent disruption broke out.

Supporters of expelled ANCYL president Julius Malema jeered him and injured an SABC cameraman.

Sibusiso Nkomiyahlaba, Loyiso Nkohla, Menzi Manyanga, Zuko Ngejane, Siviwe Gxothiwe and Mbi Athenkosi appeared before an ANC provincial disciplinary committee last week.

The charges against Gxothiwe and Athenkosi were withdrawn.

The other four submitted written apologies for their misconduct, as per an agreement.

They were ordered to attend a compulsory political education school within the next six months.

“The four respondent comrades will perform community service within six months as determined by PEC,” said Mjongile. - Sapa
