|||A man has been convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison by the Mthatha High Court for raping a one-year-old girl, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.
Alberton Lungelo Ntozini, 22, raped his girlfriend's child on June 11, 2008 at Ndakana village, Ngqamakwe, near Butterworth, said Captain Jackson Manatha.
Ntozini was convicted and sentenced on Friday.
He said he wanted to play with the child on the day of the rape.
“The suspect then returned the baby at a later stage but the mother discovered that the baby was restless and she decided to inspect her at her private parts,” said Manatha.
The girlfriend became suspicious and took the baby to a doctor to be examined, who confirmed the baby had been raped.
The mother reported the incident to police, and following an investigation, Ntozini was later arrested. - Sapa
