Amid chants of “Beeeast” and “Lambie”, the Springboks’ open practice session at Durban North’s Northwood High School on Monday was a hit with pupils, parents and the public.

Many were delighted to see their favourite players, including Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, Pat Lambie, Bryan Habana and Chilliboy Ralepelle – even though the players didn’t interact with their fans.

Jack Firth, 11, of Durban Preparatory High School, said it was amazing to see his heroes “live” as he had always seen them on television.

“It’s pretty amazing. My favourite player is Pat Lambie, he said. “I’m going to the game, which is super cool ’cause they never play in Durban. I hope they win on Saturday.”

Cameron Holloway, also from Durban Prep, said he was also happy to see Lambie. “He looks a bit small in real life,” he quipped.

Seven-year-old Jason Ridsdale confessed he didn’t know any of the players but he was just chuffed to see the Boks his father talks about.

Children who attended the session were given an energy drink, a miniature rugby ball and Springbok T-shirts.

A proud Northwood High School principal, Tony Jordan, said: “We’re delighted having to host our national team.

“We have wonderful facilities and we have hosted them before, but not open to the public.

“It’s great and there’s been a lot of excitement.

“I have no doubt that the Boks will win this.”

The Springboks will face England in the first game of the Castle Incoming Tour at Mr Price King’s Park Stadium on Saturday. - Daily News
