|||Walter Sisulu University paid tribute to palaeoanthropologist Phillip Tobias on Friday after he died on Thursday in a Johannesburg hospital.
“(His) life epitomised the value of academic research in mankind’s continual quest for knowledge and discovery,” the university said in a statement.
“We are proud to have Dr Tobias as an honorary graduate of our university and we mourn his passing.”
The university conferred a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree on Tobias in 2003 for his work at South Africa’s hominid fossil sites, and his contribution to research on the evolution of humankind.
