|||A drive to improve the performance of KwaZulu-Natal matrics was launched in Durban on Tuesday.
Education MEC Senzo Mchunu said at the event his department aimed to get rid of under-performance and improve subject performance.
The matric intervention programme for 2012 would run from the beginning of winter vacations until all pupils had written their final examinations, which start on October 22.
Between 2008 and 2011, the number of under-performing schools in the province dropped from 952 to 629.
Mchunu said their commitment was to ensure that this improvement was maintained.
Provincial education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said the focus would also be on teachers.
“Teachers will have their own sessions with experts, to discuss ways of improving their teaching styles when we come (back) from vacation,” he said.
“We will also be issuing out booklets to assist in studying.”
The usual catch-up programmes and revisions would continue beyond that week. - Sapa
