|||The City of Cape Town on Tuesday welcomed a Western Cape High Court ruling halting the eviction of people in Deep Freeze, Macassar.
The court ruled on Monday that residents who used to work for the Del Monte processed food factory and lived on the site could not be evicted by the land owner, property company Annenprop 5.
Annenprop 5 bought the land in 2009 and wanted the residents off the land.
The residents refused because they said the factory owner handed over settlement rights to them before the food factory was closed down.
Human Settlements mayoral committee member Ernest Sonnenberg said the city was buying the land to provide additional housing opportunities.
