A man seriously injured in a 2006 Roadlink bus crash in KwaZulu-Natal was awarded compensation by the High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.

Judge Achmat Jappie ordered Roadlink to pay Noksigabo Shezi R100 000 before July 7, and R100 000 in August.

Shezi, 21, initially claimed more than R2 million for past medical expenses, loss of earnings, future loss of earnings and other expenses.

In the accident, Shezi suffered broken limbs, a dislocated spine and brain trauma.

He said that as a result, he could no longer assist his mother, who is a herbalist in Johannesburg.

Counsel for Shezi said the accident was caused by driver fatigue, but Roadlink said that the crash resulted from sudden deflation of a rear tyre fitted to a tag axle.

Twelve people were killed in the crash and 30 others sustained serious injuries.

The bus was travelling to Durban from Johannesburg. - Sapa
