In a report compiled by the private security giant, it was revealed that overall crime decreases greatly during the winter months, with ADT providing its own theory on why this happens.
“We believe this is due to more people being at home for longer periods during the colder months,” said ADT central region managing director Roy Rawlins.
Over the past few years, they’ve noticed a decrease in serious crime throughout Joburg and the company predicts that the pattern will continue.
They also predict that crime statistics in general this winter will drop when compared to last year’s winter months.
“Incidents tend to occur earlier in the evenings, between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, as opposed to summer crimes which tend to take place later.
“This might be due to families eating later in summer as daylight is extended.
“The decrease in crime may also be the result of homes being more secure during winter with windows and doors closed and locked throughout the day and night,” said Rawlins.
But ADT warns that Joburg residents shouldn’t let their guard down despite the decrease in violent crimes.
“Residents and business owners need to remain vigilant about their security despite this decrease in crime.
“Criminals are still active, so locking up and putting on alarms remains a priority.
“Homeowners should also be more cautious of fire hazards in their homes during the dry winter months and ensure that all wiring and electrical appliances are safe and fire-proof,” Rawlins advised.
ADT says injury statistics increase during the winter months, as there are more incidents of fires reported in both open veld areas as well as in people’s homes.
The Star has reported on nearly a dozen shack fires across the city this year that have claimed several lives.
