Johannesburg - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has wished former president Nelson Mandela a joyous 94th birthday.

“Tata was one of the many congress movement leaders who understood the revolutionary role of trade unions,” Cosatu said in a statement on Tuesday.

“As trade unionists we are left every day to fight unpalatable apartheid fault lines... and Tata always had comforting words he shared with us, such as ‘the brave man is not he who does feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear’.”

Cosatu called on all its members and society to support international Mandela Day.

July 18 was declared Mandela Day by the United Nations General Assembly in November 2009.

“Cosatu calls on its membership and society at large, to emulate the noble ideals Mandela fought for, such as selflessness, dedication to serve the masses and a resolve to provide solutions of the day,” it said. - Sapa
