|||In an attempt to stamp out corruption and police misconduct, the provincial Community Safety Department has launched the “Reward a cop, report a cop” campaign.
After launching the campaign officially last week, Community Safety MEC Dan Plato on Thursday announced the department’s initiative with the Institute for Security Studies.
The programme is aimed at encouraging members of the public to report any police corruption or good work through various communication forums such as an SMS and Twitter.
Plato said: “When reporting police misconduct, please remember to report the incident and give all relevant information, as soon as possible. Take note of police names, ranks and vehicle registration numbers. By reporting bad police, you are supporting those who take their jobs seriously and want to help their communities. An effective police service is an essential part of any functioning democracy.”
Plato said there were many excellent police officers who put their lives on the line to protect the public.
“But there are also those who might not be as deserving of their badge – whether that policeman or woman needs guidance, better training, or to be removed from the service altogether – we need you to help us identify them.”
The public can report police misconduct or good work by SMSing the word “reward” or “report” to 35395 or by calling the 24-hour hotline, 021 483 4332. Faxes can be sent to the Department of Community Safety on 021 483 6026. Reports can also be e-mailed to policingcomplaints@pgwc.gov.za or tweeting to @RewardaCop.
