Durban - KwaZulu-Natal deputy speaker in the legislature Mtholephi Mthimkhulu on Tuesday condemned the rape of an 82-year-old woman.

“I was very disturbed when I read about this cruelty,” Mthimkhulu said in a statement.

The woman was raped in her house in the Mambedwini section of Swayimane on Saturday at 9pm.

“The woman was in her home when an unknown man who was already in her house overpowered her and raped her,” police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said. No arrests had been made.

The attack came a week after a 94-year-old woman was raped in her home in the same area.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with that crime last Monday in Wartburg. He appeared in the New Hanover Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of rape. He was apparently part of a group of prisoners released as part of the special remission of sentences announced by President Jacob Zuma, and had a previous conviction for theft.

Mthimkhulu said society at large needed to condemn the rape.

“What makes this worse is that it happened on the eve of the Women's Month, when the entire country will be celebrating the women and the contribution that they have made to society.” - Sapa
