MAN ARRESTED FOR KZN TAXI SHOOTINGS
A man was arrested on Friday in connection with the attempted murder of two taxi owners in Greytown last month, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
The 46-year-old was arrested in the early hours of the morning by the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit, said Captain Thulani Zwane.
On December 3, a 45-year-old taxi owner was on his way to the taxi rank in Greytwon when a car with three occupants drove past and opened fire on him.
The taxi driver ran away, but the three men got out of their car, chased him and continued shooting at him, said Zwane. He suffered several gunshot wounds, but survived.
In a second incident that day, the same three men went to the home of another taxi owner in Ematimatolo and started shooting at it, said Zwane.
The 46-year-old taxi owner ran out of the house when he heard the gunshots. He was also wounded.
Police found an R1 assault rifle and 9mm cartridges at the scene.
The 46-year-old man would appear soon in the Greytown Magistrate's Court. His accomplices were still at large.
"The police are confident that the other two implicated suspects will be traced and arrested soon," said Zwane.
