Sandton -

Twenty-one commuter buses and 11 minibus taxi were scrapped in Marlboro, Johannesburg, on Thursday, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said.

Spokesman Ashref Ismail said 34 buses were tested and 21 were discontinued.

Only two minibus taxis among the 13 that were checked were found to be roadworthy. Unroadworthy vehicles had their licence discs removed.

“Vehicles that were discontinued will have to be repaired, and be proved roadworthy in another test before they can be used on our roads.”

The RTMC and national traffic police conducted the operation.

The initiative was led by woman officers, because August is Women's Month.

The most common problems with vehicles were brakes, steering mechanisms, excessive oil leaks and smoke. Ismail said the initiative would continue throughout the month in the entire country. It would also focus on long-distance coaches, luxury buses, learner transport vehicles, and metered taxis. - Sapa
