Power cuts in Kuruman in the Northern Cape have reduced police to using the lights on their cellphones to fill out statements from complainants, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

As a result of electricity blackouts, apparently over the last three years, police have even resorted to buying and using candles, the Daily Sun reported.

When the newspaper visited the station in Batlharos it found two officers taking down a statement from a complainant.

One was writing while the other was using his cellphone to shine light on the form.

The police's Ntombi Manie told the newspaper that they were aware of the problem and were in the process of getting a generator. - Sapa
