Serbian Dobrosav Gavric made two court appearances on Friday, the first in connection with fraud charges and the second relating to pending extradition proceedings.

In the first case, he is alleged to have fraudulently entered South Africa under a false name and to have then obtained a drivers licence as well as a trade licence, also under a false name.

He appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court in front of Magistrate Jasthree Steyn.

Dave Damerell, a deputy director in the Western Cape Directorate for Public Prosecutions, told the court the matter was still under investigation and that additional charges would be added to the fraud charges.

The fraud case was postponed to March 6 after which Gavric made his second appearance, this time before Magistrate Joe Magele, in connection with the pending extradition proceedings.

A different prosecutor, Nazieroedien Rajab, told the court the extradition proceedings would be scheduled when Gavric made his next appearance in court on March 6.

At the request of defence attorney Juan Smuts, Gavric was remanded to the Goodwood prison.

Gavric fled Serbia to escape a 35-year jail sentence for a triple murder, of which one of the victims was a Serbian “warlord” known as Arkan. – Sapa
