Saturday Star visits construction site of Malema mansion; neighbours hoping for a bargain.
|||Julius Malema’s neighbours have been observing the construction of his R16 million mansion in Sandton with curiosity – hoping they might pick up the unfinished multi-storey house for a bargain.
This week, the Saturday Star visited the construction site of the mansion in Silvela Road, Sandown Estate and found neighbours counting on Malema’s latest political troubles to affect his wallet.
“Well, people around have been very curious in recent weeks but this week was probably the busiest we have ever seen in terms of activity on the site, with massive trucks coming in with loads of concrete, cement and bricks,” said one. “I don’t know if people thought with his political troubles he could maybe sell the house for almost nothing halfway through the construction.”
Another neighbour believes the building could be completed sooner than expected if the intensity of the workers is anything to go by.
“Suddenly it does seem like they are rushing for a deadline,” said the neighbour. “Maybe when it’s finished we will get invites to a house warming again like he (Julius) did when he first moved here. I’m sure the party will be even bigger this time.”
Malema’s house will have an underground panic room and a first floor which can also be used as a viewing platform and party deck.
