With another long weekend approaching, KZN has only two days of blood supplies left.
|||KwaZulu-Natal only has enough blood supplies to last two days and the SA National Blood Service said it could be in a dire predicament if there was a major accident.
Blood service spokeswoman Gail Nothard said that although the daily amount of blood needed for surgery was down, as most medical procedures were scheduled to resume on January 3, the demand was still huge as the number of accidents increased during the festive season.
By midday on Wednesday, even the national blood stock level was in the red, with just enough to last three days.
She appealed to individuals who led a “sexually safe lifestyle”, weighed more than 50kg and were aged between 16 and 65 to become donors.
Nothard appealed to people not to become donors in order to find out what their HIV status was because they could endanger the blood supply.
