The bail application of a former US soldier accused of faking his own death has been denied.
|||The bail application of a former US soldier accused of faking his own death was denied by the Sterkspruit Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.
Captain Ursula Roelofse said Karl Rashid, 51, and his South African wife, Antoinette Rashid, 45, appeared in court on Tuesday.
“Only the wife was given bail, with certain conditions,” she said.
The Rashid couple face charges of murder and fraud. They allegedly decided to fake the man's death after financial problems, in order to get insurance payouts.
In October last year, the husband allegedly set his car on fire in an open area. It was found with the charred remains of a human body. The wife allegedly told police the remains were her husband's.
She submitted claims for all the policies under her husband's estate, some of which were paid out. The couple met in the US, where they were both soldiers, before resigning and moving to South Africa.
“The case was postponed to August 3 for further investigation,” Roelofse said. – Sapa
