uMlazi police officers have arrested a 35-year-old hijacker after he sped off when cops attempted to pull him over.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said the incident happened on Wednesday when patrolling members spotted the man driving in uMlazi's P-section.

“The driver ignored the police’s request to stop and sped off. A chase ensued and the suspect lost control of the vehicle which overturned,” said Naicker.

It's believed that thereafter the man abandoned the vehicle -- a bakkie -- and fled.

Naicker said while running awa, the suspect turned around and opened fire at police, who returned shots, wounding him in his hip.

“The injured suspect was taken to the hospital under police guard.”

Naicker said when officers ran the license plate of the bakkie, it was found that the vehicle had been hijacked from nearby Brighton Beach an hour earlier.

The arrested man is expected to appear in the uMlazi Magistrate's Court soon.

He will be charged with hijacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. - IOL
