|||A Western Cape man was given a three-year suspended jail term on Wednesday for paying a R4 500 bribe to a Hawks officer for police uniforms and ammunition,
One of the conditions of the suspension was that Waleed Diedericks testified truthfully when the officer, Captain Esmerald Bailey, went on trial in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crime Court.
This meant that if the commercial crime court ruled Diederick's testimony at Bailey's trial was not altogether truthful, it would amount to a violation of the condition of the suspension.
He would then have to serve a three-year sentence.
Diedericks pleaded guilty on a charge of corruption in the Cape Town Regional Court on Wednesday for paying Bailey a bribe.
The proceedings, before Magistrate Michelle Adams, took the form of a plea-bargain agreement.
Diedericks, who lived in the same block of flats as Bailey, admitted to receiving police uniforms as well as 27 live cartridges of varying calibres from her.
Bailey made her first appearance in court on April 5, on eight charges of corruption, possession of ammunition and drugs, as well as five counts of defeating the ends of justice.
She was expected to appear in the Commercial Crime Court again in May. - Sapa
