Blaming unions for poor matric results and other ills in the school system has earned National Youth Development Agency chairman Andile Lungisa a tongue-lashing from Cosatu and the SA Students Congress, who accuse him of union-bashing.

Lungisa said on Sunday that education should be declared an essential service and be de-unionised, and that the agency was preparing to engage unions and the Department of Basic Education on the issue.

“If we don’t deal with unions (in the education system), this country will not succeed and we will be sabotaging future generations,” he was quoted as saying.

“He ignored the many factors that undermine our basic education system,” said Phindile Kunene, editor of the labour federation’s Shopsteward magazine.

“This ideological onslaught on teacher unions is premised on the false notion that organised teachers are selfishly concerned about themselves.” - Political Bureau
