The Gauteng basic education department will assess an East Rand school that reportedly does not have workbooks.
|||Johannesburg - The Gauteng basic education department will assess an East Rand school that reportedly does not have workbooks, an official said on Monday.
“We are aware that not all workbooks for term three, which started on 16 July 2012 have been distributed,” spokesman Charles Phahlane said.
“We have compiled a list to urgently request the supply of additional workbooks. We are also sending officials on Tuesday to assess the situation at Edenglen Primary School.”
The Democratic Alliance earlier said the school had not yet received maths and science textbooks, and other workbooks for the second half of the year.
Phahlane said there needed to be clarity on the difference between workbooks and textbooks.
“There is big difference between workbooks and textbooks. Workbooks are supplementary books in maths, language and life skills,” he said in a statement.
“They give guidance to educators on what to teach and are aligned to the curriculum assessment and policy statement. Textbooks are broader and would contain more information.”
He said a workbook could be used in the absence of a textbook.
DA Gauteng education spokesman Khume Ramulifho said on Monday the party had contacted Gauteng education MEC Barbara Creecy to ask for the remaining textbooks to be delivered.
“This school also only received workbooks for the first half of this year in May, and like many other schools in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape... now has to play catch up in order for them to complete their 2012 syllabus on time,” he said in a statement. - Sapa
