The Western Cape agriculture department has been commended for dismissing an employee allegedly involved in organising a dog fight near Plettenberg Bay last year.

“Appreciation is expressed that the department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries has taken an issue of animal cruelty seriously,” the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said on Monday.

The fired employee, Ferdinand Endemann, was one of 10 people arrested in a raid on a smallholding in Ladywood, where a fight between American Pitbulls took place on May 14, 2011.

Complaints lodged by the NSPCA were taken up by the department, which then took action in the form of a disciplinary hearing at which the NSPCA gave aggravating evidence.

Endemann was found guilty of bringing the department's name into disrepute and was dismissed.

He was criminally charged, but the case has not yet come to court.

Police found two severely injured pitbull terriers fighting inside a large cage during the raid. - Sapa
