School latecomers will not be taken to the police station, but their parents will be contacted, a Gauteng education official said on Monday.

“If learners arrive late at school, they will be separated from their peers, and their parents will be called in to deal with issues of discipline. Learners won't be taken to a police station,” said spokesman Charles Phahlane.

He stressed the importance of the role parents play in making sure their children arrive at school on time to ensure they receive a full day of schooling.

Earlier, Gauteng education MEC Barbara Creecy visited Lavela High School in Soweto, where she said: “From tomorrow (Tuesday), anyone arriving late will be taken to the Jabulani police station.... We will then call your parents to come and collect you.”

About 700 pupils and several teachers arrived late for classes at the school on Monday, when Creecy made a surprise visit.

They arrived between 30 minutes and an hour after the 7.50am bell rang. - Sapa
