|||The Table Mountain Cableway management on Thursday expressed concern after a tourist mistook a mugger on the mountain for an official guide, the company said.
A 21-year-old man from Durban went up the mountain on Wednesday with his family and decided to go for a short hike from the top station to Maclear’s Beacon, CEO Sabine Lehmann said.
“The mugger took the tourist's wallet, cellphone and camera. Cellphone video footage shot by one of the family members shows the attacker was wearing black pants and a lime green shirt and was carrying a red bag.”
The footage was handed to police to help their investigation. Lehmann said they had alerted their staff about the incident and asked them to report any sightings of the man.
“Any mugging incident is a cause for concern, but we are particularly alarmed that the mugger was mistaken for a guide.
“An incident like this has never happened before,” said Lehmann.
In November, Table Mountain was named one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature” by a global poll organised by “new7wonders.com”.
It is expected that South Africa will gain an additional 108,000 international tourists a year due to the increased exposure of Table Mountain being declared one of the new wonders. - Sapa
