|||A student constable appeared in the Noupoort Magistrate's Court on Tuesday facing a charge of attempted murder, the Independent Complaints Directorate said.
He was granted R300 bail and the case postponed to April 12, spokesman Moses Dlamini said.
The officer was arrested in connection with the shooting of 24-year-old Marlen Baarties in Noupoort, Northern Cape, on Saturday. Baarties had a domestic squabble with his family and his father went to the local police station to seek help.
The father wanted police to detain his son until he had calmed down, said Dlamini. Two policemen accompanied the father home, and ordered Baarties out of the house. Dlamini said Baarties then tried to run away.
The student constable gave chase and when he could not catch up, allegedly drew his service pistol and fired a shot, hitting Baarties in the face. Dlamini said he was not seriously hurt. - Sapa
