“The health unit has finally identified and confirmed the source of the cat urine-like odour which has plagued residents (intermittently), in the South Durban area,” eThekwini municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said on Tuesday.
Mofokeng said the company Fuel Firing System (FFS) Refiners (Pty) Ltd in the Clairwood area would face legal action. He said the “waste streams” which caused the odour on Saturday morning had been isolated.
Mofokeng did not elaborate on the nature of the substance in the waste streams, but said further testing was being done.
The company had co-operated with health officials, he said.
Mofokeng said the source of cat urine-like odours floating across the southern suburbs had previously not been identified. - Sapa
